Annual Tzu Chi Global Bone Marrow Donation Statistics

Since its establishment in 1993, Tzu Chi’s bone marrow registry has helped patients in 28 countries receive life-saving bone marrow or stem cell transplants.

In 2002, Tzu Chi’s registry developed into the Buddhist Tzu Chi Stem Cell Center which operates a marrow donor registry, an umbilical cord blood bank, a recruitment group, and an immunogenetic research laboratory.
  • In total, bone marrow donations were held in 28 countries/regions.
    • From 1994-2012: 3,085 cases.
    • 2012 new cases: 354 cases.

USA 3 5/30/2003: Through the US National Marrow Donor Program (MNDP), Tzu Chi identified 2 matches that were subsequently sent to Taiwan. The bone marrow transplant operations for the 2 patients were carried out by doctors in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou District, Taiwan.
China

7/20/2007: Through the People's Republic of China (PRC) Bone Marrow bank, the first 2 matches were found and sent to Taiwan. In 2011, Tzu Chi requested 3 donations from China.
